For all the SEM professionals out there, we’ve always taken into consideration the position of our ads on the SERPS as an indicator of success within our Google Ads campaigns. We all want our ads to be showing up first, on the top of the page right? Right! Well, Google just recently announced they’ll be rolling out a new way of representing your ad’s search result’s position in the coming weeks.
The New Position Metrics
There are two new metrics representing the top of the page or the absolute top position as well as two new metrics representing all ad impressions above the organic search results.
Impressions (Absolute Top) %: This is what people think of as position one, it represents the percent of your ad impressions that are shown as the very first ad above the organic search results.
Impressions (Top) %: This is the percent of your ad impressions that show above the organic search results but are not always in position one.
Search (Absolute Top) Impressions Share: The impressions you’ve received in the absolute top location above the organic search results divided by the estimated number of impressions you were eligible to receive in the top location.
Search (Top) Impressions Share: The impressions you’ve received in the top locations above the organic search results compared to the estimated number of impressions you were eligible to receive in the top location.
What it means for digital marketers
This is a helpful improvement to the usually fuzzy indicator of where your ads are showing up on the search results.
The two impression % metrics show when and where ad impressions display above the organic search results.
The two IS (impression share) metrics show the share of impressions that were eligible for top-of-page impressions, above the organic results.
Google recommends using the new impression share metrics when it comes to maximizing your Google Ads campaign results and reaching your digital marketing goals.
